Connectivism

As coined by George Siemens, connectivism as a learning theory proposes that the most effective way to learn in today's society is through a combination of social contact, cultural contact and technology.  Connectivism is a new age theory eager to reform traditional models of learning (i.e. behaviourism, cognitivism and constructivism) and is unique in suggesting that connections must be developed and maintained in order to continue learning.  Most elementary classrooms have access to different modes of technology and resources allowing students the ability to make connections at the tap of a button through tools such as blogs, wikis, YouTube, etc.  For example, just reading the article about connectivism lead me to feel confused about what I had just learned but after watching the videos on Youtube and exploring the discussion (making connections), I was able to further my understanding and form ideas.

In class this week, we explored an interesting activity that taught us concepts related to connectivism.  We were instructed to draw a circle and separate it into four parts.  We were then asked to imagine what things could come from an oak tree.  I came up with the ideas fire, oxygen, paper and shade.  As soon as other people shared their ideas, I was able to expand my ideas about what an oak tree does (i.e. food and shelter for animals, acts as a place for play (tire swings).  This is a demonstration of connectivism; when people are able to collaborate and share ideas we have a wider understanding of ideas/concepts.
